The FDA is investing in the improved testing methods for dry powder inhalers. It announced plans to provide Australian researchers with more than $600,000 in funding to help researchers develop more effective inhalers, particularly generic versions, which will improve access and affordability to patients across the globe.

The researcher team is being led by University of Sydney Associate Professor Agisilaos Kourmatzis, from the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering, and Professor Hak-Kim Chan, who leads the Advanced Drug Delivery Group at the Sydney Pharmacy School.

In Australia, dry powder inhalers are subsidized through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. However, they remain expensive to manufacture and purchase, as they represent substantial inefficiency.

According to Kourmatzis, dry powder inhalers are a tricky area to study because they deliver complex dosages compared to medicines that are swallowed, like tablets.
