Artificial intelligence (AI) is at it again. Now, AI is being hailed for its ability to identify high-risk patients with asthma and COPD.

Jose Gomez Villalobos, MD, MSJose Gomez Villalobos, MD, MSA recent study revealed that AI can process large data sets to pinpoint people at an increased risk of hospitalization. Lead study author Jose Gomez Villalobos, MD, MS, associate professor of medicine and director of the Center for Precision Pulmonary Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine, said researchers used patient electronic health records (EHR) to identify severe asthma and COPD exacerbations. They then leveraged four machine learning models and one deep learning model to predict hospital readmissions. The team said the deep learning method yielded the best performance.

The study demonstrated that AI could help pulmonologists develop new classifications for asthma, COPD and other conditions. Armed with this knowledge can help patients benefit from targeted therapies, he said, and reduce hospitalizations.

In the future, Dr. Villalobos believes the information gathered from this study and AI will help clinicians treat patients from minority and other groups who may be at high risk.

“The power of these neural networks — or AI — is that they enable us to synergize and transform what we do as clinicians to achieve better outcomes for all patients,” Dr. Villalobos said.
