Allergy & Asthma Network has partnered with research and development company MITRE to launch Asthma Equity Explorer at AsthmaEquity.org. The database is a free, web-based platform designed to disseminate data on the prevalence of asthma in the United States.

More than 25 million people in the U.S. have asthma. In addition to helping families and health researchers analyze data on asthma prevalence, it looks at related social determinants of health in communities nationwide. For example, the database can visualize and evaluate data, including socioeconomic factors, particulate matter concentration, and related asthma health measures at state, county, and city-levels.

The database uses MITRE's Independent Research and Development Program. Within the area of health, the not-for-profit's researchers are focused on pursuing evidence-based solutions that advance data interoperability and improve healthcare access and equity.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) represents the conditions of the places in which people live, work, learn, worship, and play and the tie to asthma outcomes. The database sources and combines data from Census.govCenters for Disease Control and PreventionAtmospheric Composition Analysis GroupU.S. Department of Housing and Urban DevelopmentU.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Richmond. It looks at:

  • Race/ethnicity
  • Income to poverty ratio
  • Education levels
  • Home ownership versus rental
  • Access to healthy foods
  • Affordable housing
  • Smoking prevalence
  • Obesity prevalence
